Even if they are married, they receive benefits with double the amount, so with one payment per person, of course if both are eligible.

As for the unemployed and who are registered in the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), will also benefit. 

However, all those who, in 2021, received at least a portion of unemployment insurance or subsidy from the Government of Portugal will be included.

What is Jobseeker's Allowance and what are its conditions?

The Government of Portugal offers programs to support unemployed people, known as Subsídio de Desemprego, it refers to a monthly payment to cover the lack of remuneration in cases of involuntary job loss.

As mentioned above, this aid is a right of unemployed taxpayers, in addition to being responsible for the Social Security Institute. Therefore, there are some restrictions on receiving this aid.

Have a suspended employment contract and have wages due on arrears;

Who is Unemployment Benefit for?

Workers involved in the general Social Security scheme for workers on account of which:

They had an employment contract and became unemployed;

have suspended the employment contract based on unpaid wages Domestic service workers;

Invalidity pensioners from the General Social Security System;

Workers who are part of the customs sector;

Basic and secondary education teachers;

Ex-soldiers under contract or even volunteering;

Agricultural workers registered with Social Security since January 2011;

Undifferentiated agricultural workers, but it is necessary to be registered with Social Security until December 2010;

Workers appointed to management positions, but the date of appointment belongs to the company's own staff as contract workers for at least one year;

Contracted workers, for example: managers, partners or not, in a non-profit company, therefore it is necessary that they do not receive any type of remuneration for the exercise of these functions.

Where to apply for unemployment benefit?

To apply, you must register for 'employment at the job center' closest to the area where you live, the location will also be requested on the benefit. 

And the requested documents must also include an identification document:

• • Identity Card or Citizen Card for Portuguese citizens;

• • Authorization to live and work in Portugal for citizens of countries outside the European Union, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland;

• • Identity Card or valid passport for citizens of the European Union and Taxpayer Card.
